Guro Kvifte Nesheim & Floating Sofa Quartet

WHERE: Anniversary concert Thursday, The North Sea Concert Saturday

Ordering works: Coastal
From Agder to the Nordics

IN Coastal a star team of traditional musicians from four Nordic countries meet to dive deep into their common musical traditions, and perform music from the coastal areas in their own, sparkling way. Farsund Folk Festival is proud to help realize this commissioned work, and not least to present the premiere at this year's festival!

Historically, folk music has been clearly influenced by international trade journeys, and there are many musical similarities between the neighboring countries in the Nordics. In 2021, the Norwegian harding fiddler Guro Kvifte Nesheim played in Farsund, and became aware that many of the beats she had grown up with were actually music from the coast. In the same year, she stepped in as a substitute in the Floating Sofa Quartet at Folkelarm in Oslo. During the concert, some of the leading traditional musicians from four Nordic countries met, and began to discuss the similarities between the music from the coastal areas of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. This is how the idea of creating the commissioned work grew Coastal until now, and in August you'll hear Nordic coastal music like you've never heard it before!

Floating Sofa Quartet has been working with Nordic folk music across national borders for ten years. Their vision is to bring together the cultural heritage of the Nordic countries, and create music that both preserves and renews tradition. Guro Kvifte Nesheim is one of our foremost Harding fiddle players, and has apprenticed with Salve Austenå in Agder. She has released a number of critically acclaimed albums with her own bands GKN5 and Skrekk og Guro, and is considered one of the foremost performers of Agder music.

The Ordering Agency has received a grant from the Norwegian Directorate of Culture.
