Storm Weather Shanty Choir

Storm Weather Shanty Choir is a six-man rock chantikor from Stord

Shanties are work songs that were used at sea, and in the Storm Weather Shanty Choir interpretation, the shanties are performed in a rock´n roll costume where the audience gets involved and sings with full throat - that is, about rocka all-singing! With just as strong energy, they take the audience all the way down when they perform beautiful and melancholy sailor songs about longing and lost love at sea.

Storm Weather Shanty Choir celebrates its 21st anniversary in 2021, and Stord's rock choir is in fashion like never before. Already in January, 2021 was named "The Year of Shanties" and the old sailor's songs have completely taken off on social platforms such as Tik Tok. SWSC is in every way part of the new trend and has experienced enormous interest from abroad and gained completely new followers. This means that completely new generations have opened their eyes to this rich singing tradition and of course that we are very proud that Storm Weahter Shanty Choir will be visiting the festival this year.

Last year, the band's six albums were streamed three million times around the world, and they have topped the iTunes charts several times. Since 2010, the band has been on three nationwide tours in Norway, two US tours and three Japanese tours, in addition to concerts in Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, England and Scotland.

Former sailing boat mate Haakon Steinar Vatle founded Storm Weather Shanty Choir after sailing the seas on the 3-masted steel barge «Statsraad Lehmkuhl». Haakon Steinar Vatle returned to the island of Stord on the west coast of Norway and gathered a bunch of long-haired rockers, and the rest is history, as they say. The choir is known as a colorful element in both folk music environments and in more rock-oriented music scenes, and their fun and engaging performances are a definite must-see for all music lovers.

We look forward to SWSC turning the city and the festival on its head. They will participate in the North Sea concert, festival inn and at Backes Bu on Saturday. In addition, you can get a taste of the shanties and practice taking part in the all-singing at Friday's shanty pub.
