Burns on dialect

Åsmund Nordstoga, Sarah Jane Summers and Ingebjørg Lognvik Reinholdt present a program with new translations of the Scottish folk poet Robert Burns' popular lyrics, on the original melodies from the Scottish singing tradition.

Peter Fjågesund has translated a large number of the Scottish national poet Robert Burns' poems into the West Telemark dialect. Burns' poems were used as lyrics to songs sung on traditional melodies, just like many of Telemark's most beloved poets. Peter Fjågesund's translations have become a concert with two singers from Telemark, Ingebjørg Lognvik Reinholdt and Åsmund Nordstoga. With them is one of the best fiddle players of our time from Burn's homeland, Sarah Jane Summers. This trio also brings with them the innovative musicians Juhani Silvola on guitar and Morten Kvam on double bass. There will be new fresh events on Scottish folk tunes and tunes, and all on sounding western telemarkets.

New arrangements of popular melodies such as Auld Lang Syne and A Red Red Rose are mixed with Scottish fast-paced dance soles to livelier poems such as Rigs o 'Barley and Weary fa' you Duncan Gray. Inspired by the traditional Norwegian kvedingen and Sarah Jane's Scottish tradition, the concert will be a separate border country somewhere out in the North Sea (perhaps just outside Farsund?) That pays homage to dialects, the folk songs and the close poetry of the folk poet Robert Burns.

Ahead of the Burns concert, we release Sarah - Jane Summers and Juhani Silvola who recently released a new record and are celebrating their 10th anniversary as artists.

Sarah-Jane Summers & Juhani Silvola is an internationally acclaimed duo, with two albums named "Top of the World" by Songlines magazine. This concert celebrates the release of their third album as well as the duo's 10th anniversary, and shows a soundscape that has been honed by many years of active tournament.

With almost telepathic interplay and great virtuosity, interspersed with amounts of improvisation, Sarah-Jane and Juhani merge Scottish and Nordic traditions into their own form of cross-genre folk music. The whole spectrum of emotions is present in the music, from the beautiful, light and bright to the rawness, heaviness and darkness. A concert with the duo engages both the body and the head of the listener and inspires as much to wild dancing as to quiet reflection.

Sarah-Jane Summers is one of Scotland's foremost fiddle players and is a traditional bearer of the fiddle style from the Scottish Highlands. She has a master's degree in Norwegian folk music from NMH and has released a number of critically acclaimed solo albums with both traditional and improvised music, as well as played with e.g. Susanna Wallumrød, Highasakite, Julie Fowlis and GRIT Orchestra.

In addition to being a sought-after and versatile guitarist, Juhani Silvola is both a renowned composer of electroacoustic contemporary music and a record producer, and plays with i.a. Frode Haltlis Avant Folk.
